The Minimalist, a crowave by Mo Naught MC-00000

The Minimalist

Mo Naught · Founder, Studio Ø

Naught once returned an award because the trophy had "too much going on." She owns one fork. She has opinions about the fork.

No input. No output. It cooks or it doesn't. Never mind timers: you know when your food is done, and if you don't, that's a you problem. Engineering footnote: a load-sensing drive coupler detects anything over 50 g (about 1.76 oz, roughly one sad tortilla) and starts cooking the moment the door closes. Open the door and it stops. It gives up after 20 minutes, which is more patience than the designer has.

Knobs, a crowave by Knobert Turnquist MC-KNOB2

    Knobs

    Knobert Turnquist · Rotational Purist

Turnquist has not pressed a button since 1998. His car, his phone and his doorbell have all been retrofitted with dials. His doorbell no longer works.

A crowave needs exactly two inputs: power and duration. Twist both on two big, deeply satisfying knobs. Power runs from 60 to 1200 watts, and you can roll from defrost straight into cooking without starting a new program, because programs are for people who give up. Turn the timer past one second and it starts. Need more time? Turn it up. Want to stop early? Turn it down. Want to press something? Leave.

The Batchelor, a crowave by Chad Freezerton MC-SOLO1

      The Batchelor

      Chad Freezerton · Lifestyle Engineer

Freezerton's apartment has one chair, a 98-inch TV and a crowave. He describes his diet as "meal prep by someone else."

A slim cooking chamber in a full-size cabinet. What's all that extra space for? An integrated freezer, obviously. Push a button and a ready-made frozen meal lowers itself into the chamber like a tiny elevator of shame. The mirror-chrome finish lets you check your hair while dinner spins. Dinner for one, every night, forever.

The Mixtape, a crowave by Sam Pell MC-HITS1

        The Mixtape

Sam Pell · Chief Audio Officer

Pell spent fifteen years making ringtones and still considers it his serious period. He has not said a sentence of his own since 2009.

Beeping is for amateurs. When your food is done, The Mixtape plays a pop-culture audio snippet chosen from a library of thousands: a movie-trailer voice announcing your leftovers, a sitcom laugh track, a game-show buzzer when you open the door too early, a stadium crowd chanting your name. Reheated soup has never felt so cinematic. Licensing status: pending. Lawyers: sweating. Twin chrome dials control volume and drama.

The Executive, a crowave by Grant Thornbury III MC-EXEC1

          The Executive

Grant Thornbury III · Chief Reheating Officer

Thornbury spent two decades designing boardroom tables before realizing nobody had ever made a crowave that could chair a meeting.

Grand chassis in obsidian with a smoked window, so nobody sees what you're reheating. The VFD display reads out quarterly results between cycles. The single chrome dial only turns clockwise. Growth only.

            Fjord, a crowave by Sven Halvorsen-Nakamura MC-FJORD

            Fjord

            Sven Halvorsen-Nakamura · Minimalist, maximally

Halvorsen-Nakamura believes every button is a failure of imagination. His studio in Bergen has no furniture, just one very good chair.

Slim glacier-white casework with a clear window and a hidden pocket handle. One OLED strip and a glass touch pad that only lights up when it senses you are hungry.

Le Bistro, a crowave by Marisol Dupont-Aguilar MC-BSTRO

              Le Bistro

              Marisol Dupont-Aguilar · Retro-futurist

Dupont-Aguilar designs for a 1974 that never happened. Her kitchen has a conversation pit.

Avocado green with amber glass and nixie tubes that glow like a jazz club. Twin bakelite dials: one for time, one for mood. It plays nothing, but you'll hear something.

                Copperhead, a crowave by Pip Okonkwo-Laurent MC-CPRHD

                Copperhead

                Pip Okonkwo-Laurent · Industrial provocateur

Okonkwo-Laurent's work has been described as "aggressively brushed." Pip took this as a compliment and had it engraved on a plaque, which is also copper.

Compact brushed copper with a push-button door, a retro LCD and twin fluted dials. It develops a patina over time, as should you.
